Beyond the Borora is a local history website designed to raise awareness of monuments and events of historical importance in northern County Meath, Ireland. Nestled near the River Borora on the borders of Meath and Cavan, the villages of Kilmainhamwood, Moynalty, and Tierworker have stood as the frontier of various kingdoms for centuries. Despite its rich history, this region remains regrettably lesser known throughout the county. Beyond the Borora attempts to explain the origins of the people who once lived here and the events that shaped their lives.
Beyond the Borora primarily deals with medieval history in north Meath and east Cavan up to the coming of the Normans, though more recent history is mentioned in part with regard to castles and battles. The chapters have been intentionally kept short and concise in order to give a broad overview of key events. A list of references has been included at the bottom of each page for those interested in further reading. The intention is to expand and grow the website in due course, so if you have any ideas or topics you would be interested in learning about please get in touch at beyondtheborora@outlook.com
A NOTE ON THE LOGO
The hills in the Beyond the Borora logo represent the Loughanleagh mountain, which is where the River Borora rises before flowing through Moynalty and meeting the Blackwater at Kells. The cross on the left represents Moybologue graveyard, while the trees to the right signify the woodland around Kilmainhamwood.
