A History of the People and the Places around the River Borora in County Meath, Ireland
The Down Survey
Two major surveys took place in Ireland in the mid-17th century: these were the Civil Survey (1654-56) and the Down Survey (1656-58). The Civil Survey detailed landholders and their properties prior to the rebellion of 1641. The Down Survey, which was the more accurate of the two, then provided maps of those properties and listed who would be stripped of their land. For most of the Catholic gentry that meant having their properties redistributed amongst Cromwell’s soldiers, supporters and those who had financed the war.
A list of land transfers can be found on the Down Survey of Irelandwebsite, provided for public viewing by Trinity College Dublin. In the online maps, some of the townlands around Moynalty (Baltrasna, Curraghtown, Donore, Newcastle and Screeboge) all appear in different baronies and not in the Barony of Kells. There may also be an error in the recording of Boynagh and Boherlea placenames, as Boherlea is recorded as ‘Buanagh’, which seems to be a corruption of Boynagh.
* Baltrasna – Wrong barony/parish and looks to be an error. I cannot find a reference in the Books of Survey & Distribution to Baltrasna but it possibly formed a part of Donnover.

* Screeboge – Wrong barony/parish and looks to be an error. Screeboge is possibly ‘Screebo’, which was owned by Christopher Plunkett and passed to Sir William King. Currently Cornaville North and Cornaville South are recorded as ‘Screebo’ on the Down Survey website, however Cornaville may actually be part of Corboggy as it looks disproportionately large on the ‘Parrish of Moynalty’ map. Alternatively, Screeboge may be ‘Schraboy’ as recorded on the ‘The Four Poles of Ardmagh’ map.
